project details

The project involved the design of a rear extension conceived as a natural continuation of the existing kitchen, dining, and bar area, creating a generous and flexible space for entertaining. The brief also included a garden room and an external kitchen and dining area, all designed to share a consistent architectural language and material palette.

Having previously redesigned the internal layout and kitchen spaces for the client, the extension was carefully integrated to enhance circulation, openness, and the relationship between inside and outside. The result is a cohesive sequence of spaces that flow seamlessly from the interior into the garden.

The extension is clad in nominal 50mm-wide timber battens that have been burnt in a controlled process to achieve a deep black, textured finish. This technique enhances the timber’s natural resistance to pests, rot, moisture, and fire, resulting in a durable and sustainable cladding solution. The charring creates a protective carbon layer that increases longevity while giving the material a distinctive and tactile appearance.
